Guastavino's · 409 East 59th Street, New York, NY 10022
Guastavino’s sits under the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge on the Upper East Side, beneath acres of the herringbone terracotta tile vaulting that gives it its name. It’s an architectural showpiece with the East River just outside.
What the venue gives you
Soaring tiled Catalan vaults, giant arched windows, brick and stone, a mezzanine level for high wide angles, and event lighting that plays across the ceiling. Outside: the bridge’s ironwork overhead and the East River esplanade.
Where the portraits happen
- Under the vaults, shot wide and upward — the signature frame.
- The mezzanine — the whole hall and the arches in one frame.
- The arched windows — directional daylight and silhouettes.
- The bridge underpass and East River esplanade — ironwork and water outside.
Timeline notes
Shoot the interior architecture before the room is fully set and lit for dinner — the mezzanine frame especially. The esplanade and bridge underpass want daylight, so plan those before the ceremony or early in cocktail hour.
The rain plan
The interior is enormous and entirely covered — weather doesn’t touch it. The bridge underpass is also sheltered, so even the exterior frame survives light rain.
