The Best Long Island Engagement Photo Locations

The South Shore beaches at low tide, 40 minutes before sunset. Hard to beat.

Long Island packs an unusual range of backdrops into a short drive: Atlantic beaches, formal gardens, working vineyards, Gilded-Age estates and walkable downtowns. Here is where we actually take couples, and what to know about each before you pick one.

Beaches and the South Shore

Jones Beach, Robert Moses and the quieter town beaches on the East End give you open sky, dune grass and reflective wet sand. Go in the last hour before sunset in the off-season or on a weekday — summer weekends are crowded and parking is a project. Wind is the real variable; bring a second outfit idea in case hair becomes the whole shoot.

Gardens and preserves

  • Old Westbury Gardens — formal allées, a grand house, ponds. Requires a paid photo permit and has set hours; book ahead.
  • Planting Fields Arboretum (Oyster Bay) — greenhouses, a tree-lined drive, huge lawns. Permit required.
  • Bailey Arboretum and Clark Botanic Garden — smaller, softer, less formal, easier on permits.
  • Sands Point Preserve — a castle, cliffs over the Sound, woods. Dramatic; permit required.

Formal gardens give you structure — allées, hedges, symmetry — without any styling.

Vineyards and the North Fork

The North Fork wineries give you rows of vines, big skies and rustic buildings. Late September through October is peak — grapes on the vine, warm color — but it’s also the busiest. Call ahead; some vineyards welcome sessions, some require you to be a paying event client, and policies change seasonally.

Downtowns and something that means something

Port Jefferson, Huntington village, Sea Cliff, Greenport — brick, string lights, cafés and harbor views, good for couples who feel stiff in a field. Better still: the diner where you had your first date, the park where you got engaged, your own kitchen. A location with a story beats a pretty one.

Gold Coast estates

Beyond the ones with public access, several catering estates allow engagement sessions for booked wedding clients — a reason to ask your venue. Stone terraces, fountains and old trees do a lot of work for you.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need permits?
For the formal gardens and preserves, usually yes — a photography permit ranging roughly from $50 to a few hundred dollars, arranged in advance. Beaches and public downtowns generally don’t require one for a small session. We’ll tell you which applies.
When is the best time of year?
Late September to early November for color and comfortable temperatures; May and June for green and flowers. We avoid the harsh light and crowds of July and August afternoons.
Can we use two locations in one session?
If they’re close, yes — a beach and a nearby downtown, for instance. Plan for travel and an outfit change to eat into the time.
