The montage — the photo-and-video slideshow played during dinner — is the one moment the whole room stops and watches together. Done well it’s the emotional highlight of the party. Done long, it’s when people go to the bar. Here’s how to build one that lands.
Keep it to four or five minutes
The single most common mistake is length. Aim for four minutes; five is the ceiling. At roughly three seconds per photo that’s about 80–100 stills, plus a few short video clips. If you have 400 photos you love, that’s a beautiful album, not a montage. Cutting is an act of love.
A structure that works
- Baby and toddler years — the “aww” opening, set to something gentle.
- Growing up — family, siblings, grandparents, trips, the everyday.
- Who they are now — sports, music, friends, the pre-Mitzvah session. Lift the music here.
- Close — one strong recent portrait and a simple title card: their name and the date.
Music: two or three tracks, matched to the sections
One song rarely carries four minutes and three moods. Pick two or three tracks that transition on section breaks — tender, then warm, then celebratory. We license the music so the video is safe to post and share afterward; popular chart songs usually can’t be cleared for that.
Technical bits that matter
- Scan prints at 300–600 dpi — low-res phone photos of photos look rough on a big screen.
- Deliver horizontal photos where you can; a montage of vertical phone shots means black bars for half the run.
- Confirm the venue’s screen aspect ratio and connection before the edit locks.
- Give the DJ or AV team the final file and a backup on a second drive.
When to hand it over
Give us your selects and music preferences three to four weeks before the date. That leaves time for one round of changes without a panic the week of. If we’re already doing your event film, we can carry the montage’s look and music through into the highlight video so the whole day feels of a piece.
