Planning Your Sweet 16 Photography and Video

A portrait session before the party means the gown gets photographed while it’s perfect.

A Sweet 16 sits right between a Mitzvah and a wedding in structure — a formal entrance, choreographed dances, family portraits, and then a party that runs on its own energy. Here’s how to cover it so the gown, the details and the dance floor all get their due.

Do a portrait session before the party

Thirty to forty-five minutes before doors, in the gown, while hair and makeup are fresh and nothing is spilled on yet. Lobby staircases, the garden, a nice window — you want a set of calm, beautiful portraits that the fast-moving party won’t give you. These become the sign-in board, the thank-you cards and the framed print for home.

The entrance and the dances

Give us the run of show: the grand entrance, the father-daughter or parent dance, the candle or rose ceremony if you’re doing one, the first dance with friends. We position for each — one camera for the wide moment, one tight on faces — and we need a few minutes’ warning before each so we’re not caught across the room.

Family photos — keep them short and planned

  • Guest of honour with parents
  • With siblings
  • With each set of grandparents
  • The whole immediate family
  • Any specific extended-family groupings you want — written down, in order

Ten minutes during cocktail hour with a named helper rounding people up covers it. Longer than that and you’re missing your own party.

The party itself

Décor before guests enter, the dessert and candy tables, the photo booth, the DJ and dancers, the games, the montage playing, and a lot of candid friend-group photos — those are the ones the guest of honour actually wants. We’ll also pull them aside for a two-minute portrait mid-party, same as we do at a Mitzvah.

Photo, film and streaming

A highlight film of the entrance, dances and speeches is popular, and if grandparents or family can’t travel, a private live stream of the entrance and dances lets them be there. One team runs all three off a single timeline. See our Sweet Sixteen page for coverage options.

Richard Black Studio covers weddings, Bar & Bat Mitzvahs, Sweet 15 & 16 celebrations and special events across Long Island and New York — photography, films and professional live streaming from one team. Tell us what you’re planning and we’ll send availability and a quote.
