Sands Point Preserve · 127 Middle Neck Road, Sands Point, NY 11050
Sands Point Preserve — a former Guggenheim estate on the North Shore — hands a photographer an unusual range: a Tudor mansion (Hempstead House), a stable block that looks like a castle (Castle Gould), a great lawn to Long Island Sound, and woodland trails. The plan is mostly logistics.
What the venue gives you
Hempstead House’s stone facade and formal rooms, Castle Gould’s dramatic courtyard and towers, a broad lawn ending at cliffs over the Sound, wooded paths, and open meadow. Ceremony and reception areas vary by package; portraits can range widely if you allow the walking time.
Where the portraits happen
- The great lawn to the Sound — open sky, water, golden hour.
- Castle Gould’s courtyard and arches — dramatic stone architecture.
- Hempstead House facade and rooms — grand, weatherproof.
- The woodland trails and cliff overlook — moody, private frames.
Timeline notes
This is a big property — don’t underestimate transit between the mansion, the castle, the lawn and the woods. Allow 45 minutes for a varied set, and hold the last 15 minutes of light for the lawn and cliff. A first look and an early start make the range usable.
The rain plan
Hempstead House’s interiors and Castle Gould’s covered arcades are solid backups. The cliff and woods are weather-dependent; umbrellas on the great lawn still produce a strong frame.
