You don’t get a say in the lighting or the backdrop on school picture day, but a few small choices at home make a real difference to the photo that ends up on the fridge for a year.
Clothing
- Solid, medium colors — jewel tones and warm neutrals photograph well. Avoid neon, all-white and all-black.
- A collar or a defined neckline looks tidy in a tight crop. Layers — a cardigan, a henley — add a bit of structure.
- Skip large logos, slogans and tight stripes or checks (they can shimmer on camera).
- Check it’s clean and unwrinkled the night before. Keep a backup top in the bag for spills at breakfast.
Hair and face
Hair out of the eyes and off the forehead — a trim a week before, not the night before. If your child wears glasses every day, keep them on; ask them to tip their chin down a hair to cut glare. A little lip balm stops a dry-lip grimace.
Timing and mood
Picture day mornings run late. Lay clothes out the night before, aim to leave a few minutes early, and send them in with a full stomach. A rushed, hungry kid looks rushed and hungry. A quick “smile like you mean it — think of something funny” in the car helps.
You can always retake
Every school photography company runs a retake day, and online ordering means you see proofs before you commit. If the first one isn’t right — eyes closed, weird smile, cowlick — request the retake. It’s normal and free.
