Photographing a Wedding at The Green Building

The arched windows do the lighting. Everything else is brick, beams and candles.

The Green Building · 452 Union Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231

The Green Building in Gowanus is a restored 1880s brass foundry — a single brick room with tall arched windows, beams, and a small courtyard. It’s an intimate blank canvas where the light through the windows does most of the work.

What the venue gives you

One characterful brick-walled room with a wall of arched windows, exposed structure, a mezzanine, string lighting, and a compact courtyard. Small guest counts, warm texture, and daylight that rakes across the brick in the afternoon.

Where the portraits happen

  • In the window light against the brick — the signature frame.
  • The mezzanine — a higher angle over the room.
  • The courtyard — a small exterior breather.
  • Gowanus streets and murals — industrial Brooklyn a few steps away.

Gowanus outside the door is warehouses, murals and canal-side grit.

Timeline notes

The window light is best in the afternoon, so do interior portraits before sunset. The room is small — 15 minutes covers it. A short Gowanus street walk adds a grittier second look while there’s daylight.

The rain plan

The interior is the whole show and is weatherproof. Only the courtyard and the street walk depend on the sky, and a wet Gowanus street has its own moody appeal.

Frequently asked questions

How big a wedding fits here?
It’s intimate — smaller guest counts in one room. That keeps portraits quick and the day relaxed.
Is it related to The Foundry?
Different venue and neighborhood (Gowanus, not LIC), but the same idea — a converted 1800s industrial building with brick, beams and big windows.
