Photographing a Wedding at The Plaza Hotel

The Plaza Hotel · 768 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10019

The Plaza is a Beaux-Arts landmark on Central Park South — gilded ballrooms, marble lobbies, the Palm Court — with the Pulitzer Fountain out front and Central Park directly across the street. It’s a venue where the surroundings do as much work as the rooms.

What the venue gives you

Ornate ballrooms with painted ceilings and chandeliers, grand lobby staircases, marble and gilt everywhere, and a location that puts the Pulitzer Fountain, Grand Army Plaza and Central Park within a short walk. Suites for getting ready are on site.

Where the portraits happen

  • The lobby staircases and gilded corridors — the interior signature.
  • The Pulitzer Fountain and facade — the classic New York establishing frame.
  • Central Park — the Pond and Gapstow Bridge — skyline-over-water, a two-minute walk.
  • The Palm Court or a ballroom before doors — scale and light.

Timeline notes

Do interiors before or during early cocktail hour. For the park, budget 25–30 minutes including crossing the street and the walk to Gapstow Bridge, ideally at golden hour. Midtown foot traffic is heavy; a first look makes a calmer park walk possible.

The rain plan

The interiors are among the best in the city for weather — staircases, the Palm Court, gilded halls. A covered frame under the hotel’s awning with the fountain behind still reads as The Plaza.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a permit for Central Park photos?
A small, tripod-free portrait walk with a group under about 20 people generally doesn’t require a permit. We keep it mobile and brief. Larger setups do need a Parks permit.
Is there time for both the park and the fountain?
Yes, with a first look or a dedicated 30-minute block — they’re close together. Without one, we’d prioritize the park at golden hour.
