A walkthrough a few weeks before the wedding is where a photographer turns a venue into a plan. Here’s what we’re actually looking at — and what you can check yourself if we can’t be there.
Go at the right time of day
Visit as close as possible to your wedding’s start time and season. A venue at 11am in July and the same venue at 5pm in October are different rooms — different window light, different sun angle outside, different shadows. A tour at the wrong hour tells you about the carpet, not the photos.
Trace the light
- Which way do the ceremony and reception spaces face, and where is the sun then?
- Where does soft window light land in the getting-ready rooms?
- Is the ceremony spot going to be in harsh direct sun or dappled shade at that hour?
- How is the reception room lit after dark — warm and dim, or bright and even, or nothing until you add it?
Find three portrait spots
We look for a mix within a short walk: one open-shade spot for any weather, one with a strong background (architecture, a tree line, water), and one that works at golden hour. Three good spots close together beats one great spot a ten-minute drive away.
Pin down the rain plan
Ask to see the backup space, ideally set up. Where does the ceremony go? Does the room hold all your guests and a dinner reset? How much notice does the venue need to switch? A vague rain plan is the thing most likely to blow up your timeline.
Time the walk
Pace out getting-ready room → ceremony → portrait spots → reception. If family formals are on a terrace 400 yards from the cocktail hour, that’s ten minutes each way you need in the timeline. Note stairs, gravel, and anywhere a dress will struggle.
Ask the venue three questions
- Where do couples usually take portraits here?
- Are there any restrictions on photography — rooms, flash, drones, moving furniture?
- What time does the light get good outside, according to the staff who work every wedding?
